Subject: Consultation Paper on Digital Copyright Issues (CPCDI)
I, as a Canadian citizen am writing you to express my extreme concern regarding the proposed changes to the Canadian Copyright Act.The proposed amendments would be largely unenforceable, as proper implementation of this new law would require a 'police state' mentality random monitoring of Internet traffic. In my eyes this would be a transgression of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
I urge you to reject pressures from the USA to draft legislation, which would mirror the DMCA, and negatively impact Canadian consumers, while only benefiting US companies, at the expense of personal freedom and privacy.
Data security is the responsibility of the corporation, which stands to profit from sales of their product, not the Canadian taxpayer.
I, as a computer programmer feel that my freedom to create new software, or engage new research projects would be negatively impacted by any legislation which would restrict development of new algorithms.
