Objet : Canadian copyright reform
To Industry Canada, the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Intellectual Property Policy Directorate and other concerned agencies:
I am writing to express my concerns about the Consultation Paper on Digital Copyright Issues. This is a blatant attack on the rights of software users around the world. Its provisions give too much power to (mostly American) Software publishers, and take away that power from the Canadian people.
Adobe Software has caused untold grief to a Russian programmer who has found extremely loose security holes in their supposedly secure software.
This Russian programmer told of methods to circumvent this loose security. Adobe, instead of attempting to patch these holes up, helped put this man in jail. He is not a criminal.
I urge you to remove these controversial and anti-freedom provisions from the CPDCI language. I realize that the Canadian government is probably under alot of pressure from Software companies located in the United States, and perhaps even the United States Government, but we have to take a stand on this. We have to let it be known that the Rights and Freedoms of our individuals are more important than the powers of large multi-national corporations.
