The foundation of the Federal Tourism Strategy Framework was created in 2006 during the federal/provincial/territorial meeting where challenges and priorities for strengthening tourism growth and competitiveness in Canada were developed.
The Framework complements the economic stimulus for the tourism industry that was provided in Canada's Economic Action Plan in January 2009. Canada's Economic Action Plan provides measures to support the economy, and to stimulate the long-term growth and competitiveness of the Canadian visitor economy.

This will help build a shared sense of purpose within the federal government and galvanize broad support for the achievement of a goal to grow tourism revenues in Canada.
The Framework sets out a series of key priorities focused on the enhancement of Canada's attractiveness as a tourism destination and on the engagement of tourism stakeholders.
These priorities are to:
An inter-departmental committee will be established at the ADM-level, and chaired by Industry Canada, to promote coordination and accountability among federal organizations and to work towards advancing tourism priorities in support of the vision.
The Framework calls for the development of a Federal Tourism Strategy and Action Plan.
