The Household Internet Use Survey (HIUS), which was conducted from 1997 to 2003, has been replaced in 2005 by the Canadian Internet Use Survey (CIUS). The CIUS is conducted at the individual level rather than the household level, as was the HIUS, and allows better international benchmarking. This modification in data collection also prevents direct comparison between HIUS and CIUS estimates.
The HIUS provides information on where and how Canadian use the Internet linking this information with a variety of demographic variables.
The results are widely used by policy makers from federal and provincial to shape policies and programmes related to: the uptake and barriers to the adoption and use of the Internet and electronic commerce; the digital divide; high speed access to the Internet, international benchmarking as well as adoption rates and their effect on Government-on-line initiatives.
The Household Internet Use Survey (HIUS) is available on the Statistics Canada web site.
