FedNor invests in the PARO Centre for Women’s Enterprise

THUNDER BAY, Ontario, November 10, 2009 — The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for FedNor, today announced a Government of Canada investment of $499,887, through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, in the PARO Centre for Women’s Enterprise (PARO).

The funding will support a three-year initiative, enabling PARO to expand training, networking opportunities and support services for women entrepreneurs in remote, rural communities in Northwestern Ontario.

“We understand that small and medium-sized businesses are the lifeblood of our communities,” said Minister Clement. “Through this FedNor investment, the Government of Canada is helping to ensure that women living in rural Northwestern Ontario have access to the skills development and networking opportunities to succeed in today’s economy.”

This investment complements measures in Canada’s Economic Action Plan to help communities overcome the challenges brought on by the global economic downturn. Initiatives, such as the Community Adjustment Fund and Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, are important tools in the Government of Canada’s strategy to revitalize the economy of Northern Ontario.

“FedNor’s tremendous support will help secure the long-term viability of our organization as we strengthen our programming to reach women entrepreneurs across this vast region,” said Linda Bruins, Board President, PARO Centre for Women’s Enterprise.

By supporting people, communities and business through its programs and services, FedNor is opening doors and building futures for a prosperous Northern Ontario.
