Industry Profile

Canada is considered a world leader in hydrogen and fuel cell technologies with industry-leading capabilities in: Hydrogen production, purification, distribution, storage, and fuelling; Fuel cell stack and fuel cell systems development; Product development and systems integration; Balance of plant and parts production; Manufacturing systems; and Financial, engineering and consulting service suppliers.

Canada's hydrogen and fuel cell expertise extends across the country in centres such as Calgary, Toronto, Kingston, Montréal, and Vancouver. According to the 2008 Canadian Fuel Cell Hydrogen and Fuel Sector Profile, the industry is comprised of over 80 companies collectively employing approximately 2 000 highly skilled personnel. In 2007, revenue increased to $168 million, product sales generated $83 million of revenue, and research, development and demonstration expenditures were $321 million. With more research partnerships and strategic alliances the industry is expected to experience further growth through technology development and commercialization.

As the industry has evolved, Canadian companies have strategically developed expertise in the near-market product sector which includes; Materials Handling, Backup Power, Residential Cogeneration, Portable Electronics, and Public Transportation. By building capacity and expertise in these sectors, Canadian companies are well positioned to play an important role in the commercialization of fuel cell automobile technologies and provide opportunities for early investment in the hydrogen infrastructure for mass consumer markets.
