TORONTO, Ontario, October 30, 2009 — The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology), today welcomed the chance to promote a clear and effective dialogue for policy-making between the government and Canada’s scientific community.

In a keynote speech to the inaugural Canadian Science Policy Conference, Minister of State Goodyear said that better communications among science-based stakeholders would bring benefits for the country at large.

“As the world emerges from the economic recession, Canada is well positioned and on track to emerge with a powerful knowledge-based economy,” said Minister of State Goodyear. “As the Minister of State (Science and Technology), I am thrilled to be part of an event that brings everybody to the table to lay the framework for a more innovative and competitive Canada in the 21st century.”

“Integrating science into the everyday lives of Canadians is one of the goals of the government’s Science and Technology Strategy, launched two years ago,” Minister of State Goodyear added. “That strategy has seen major investments and has already brought significant results.”

According to the latest Statistics Canada figures, federal spending on science and technology is expected to reach $10.7 billion in 2009–10.

“Canada is, and will remain, among the best countries in the world for scientists and researchers to pursue their discoveries while we strengthen our capacity to make their innovations available to the market here at home and around the world,” said Minster of State Goodyear, emphasizing the need for all sectors to come together to build the country’s knowledge economy and invest in innovative practices.
