Minister of State Guergis Congratulates Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association on its 25th Anniversary in Canada

OTTAWA, November 16, 2009 — Today, the Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister of State for the Status of Women, on behalf of the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, delivered congratulatory remarks at the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association of Canada’s (JAMA) 25th Anniversary celebration on Parliament Hill. Minister of State Guergis also used the opportunity to extend best wishes from Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

“I am pleased to have the opportunity to commend the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association of Canada as it celebrates 25 years of support for the automotive industry in Canada,” said Prime Minister Harper. “JAMA’s members continue to create trade, investment and employment opportunities right across this country.”

“Canada is truly fortunate to have Japan as a partner in automobile production,” said Minister of State Guergis during the reception. “The number of Canadian communities to which JAMA members have contributed and the tremendous economic impact the organization has had on this country are truly remarkable.

“Throughout its assembly plants, head offices, parts manufacturers and dealerships, the Japanese automotive industry currently employs 67 000 people in Canada. So far this year, 40 percent of all vehicles manufactured in Canada have been assembled by JAMA members. In April 2009, JAMA celebrated the 10 millionth vehicle to roll off the line of a Canadian assembly plant.”
