Industry Canada Action Plan 2004-2008 - Implementation of Section 41 of the Official Languages Act
Policy, Analysis and Intelligence Branch
In 1994, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien made a commitment to the official language minority communities in Canada. Indeed, 26* federal agencies, including Industry Canada, were going to adopt action plans to implement Section 41 of the Official Languages Act. The Section reads as follows: "The Government of Canada is committed to (a) enhancing the vitality of the English and French linguistic minority communities in Canada and supporting and assisting their development; and (b) fostering the full recognition and use of both English and French in Canadian society."
Since 1995, Industry Canada has been developing a plan of action. The most recent action plan covers a four-year period (2004–2008) and offers a strategic overview of Industry Canada's initiatives to address the needs of minority communities more effectively. The action plan includes national and regional initiatives. A report on achievements is also drawn up each year.
