This paper gives an overview of relevant issues about, and identifies priorities for, research into the implications of technological change and globalization and their interaction with the service trade. The study is organized under several topics: the new economy; international trade and investment; distance (i.e. transportation costs); globalization and labour markets; infrastructure and cities; and strategies for liberalization. The author makes 25 key recommendations for future research about the services sector, suggesting issue-oriented research, including about e-commerce and labour markets, supplemented by sectoral-oriented research, such as on issues pertaining to regulation.
