Working Paper Number 13, The Development of Strategic Alliances in Canadian Industries: A Micro Analysis, October 1996
Strategic Policy Sector
Economic Research and Policy Analysis Branch
Using survey data, this paper analyses the importance and the causes of strategic alliances in Canadian industries. The more obvious reasons for the emergence of strategic alliances are related to economies of scale or scope, resource pooling, and risk and cost sharing among alliance partners. But the driving forces behind the growth of alliances include globalization, systemic technological change, and the growing acceptance of the view that competition, by itself, does not ensure optimum, innovation-led growth.
