About Spectrum, Information Technologies and Telecommunications (SITT) Sector
A sector of Industry Canada, SITT has more than 1000 employees across Canada, operating under the direction of the Assistant Deputy Minister (SITT), the Deputy Minister and the Minister of Industry. SITT is composed of five branches and the Communications Research Centre.
Engineering, Planning and Standards Branch (DGEPS): Ensures the effective and efficient use of radio frequency spectrum and Canada's satellite orbital resources, and the orderly evolution of Canada's telecommunication infrastructure by negotiating treaties, international agreements and arrangements, setting technical standards and regulations; certifying equipment and broadcasting facilities; analysing security of telecommunications networks; and ensuring emergency telecommunications services.
Spectrum Management Operations Branch (DGSO): Promotes an economically efficient use of the radio frequency spectrum by developing and implementing operational regulations, policies, procedures, processes and incentives, and providing the tools, systems and coordination to support the program.
Electronic Commerce Branch (ECOM): Supports a safe and strong online marketplace that promotes business innovation, competition and growth through the development of policies, legislation and regulations and ensures equitable broadband access through the Broadband Canada program.
Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) Branch: Provides value-added knowledge, expertise about Canadian ICT industries and advocates on their behalf, and manages programs that support technology development.
Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC): Conducts world class research that provides insight into future advanced information and communications technologies to help IC develop telecommunications policies and regulations; supports other government operations such as national defence and public safety; and supports Canada's communication sectors by engaging in industry partnerships and working with other research organizations.
Governance, Policy Coordination and Planning Branch (GPP): Provides the support necessary for SITT to deliver on its key strategies including strategic planning, human resources, financial planning, management accountability, corporate functions and policy coordination; and delivers the Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching Excellence and Excellence in Early Childhood Education.
The Digital Economy Planning and Coordination Branch (DEPC): Industry Canada's lead branch responsible for the coordination, design and implementation of Canada's Digital Economy Strategy (DES).
