Ontario Economic Overview

For the past few years, the Policy, Analysis and Intelligence (PAI) directorate of Industry Canada’s regional office has developed an Ontario Economic Overview (OEO). It is prepared four times a year.

The Overview provides economic performance analysis of twelve key industry sectors in Ontario such as manufacturing, finance and insurance, tourism, construction, and retail and wholesale trade. Data from various sources in addition to a wide range of reports from banks, industry associations and newspapers are synthesized to help readers understand the fuller story from media headlines. The OEO also covers several important issues that continue to impact the province's growth. For example, the latest release issued in August looks into how the credit crisis, US economy and issues surrounding the Ontario-US border are affecting Ontario.

You'll always find interesting bits of information in the OEO. Did you know that in recent years, the service sector has been the main driver of provincial employment and output growth or that until the fourth quarter of 2008, the service sector had been cushioning gross domestic product (GDP) losses in the goods producing sector? Also, did you know that more than 90% of Canada's automotive industry is based in Ontario and that provincial output fell 22.9% in 2008 to its lowest level since 1997?
