International Trade Show Creates Tourism Opportunities
Rendez-vous Canada, the Canadian Tourism Commission's annual international tourism industry marketplace, links international buyers with Canadian sellers of tourism products. This year's event, which took place May 12–15, 2013, attracted more than 1,500 tourism leaders and showcased the "best of" Canadian experiences.
International Growth Opportunities, Canadian Jobs
In his remarks at the event, the Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism), underlined the significant contribution that tourism makes to the Canadian economy by employing Canadians from coast to coast to coast. He also mentioned the government's Federal Tourism Strategy (FTS), which is positioning the industry to take advantage of international growth opportunities while creating high-quality jobs in Canada.
Since the launch of the FTS in fall 2011, the Government of Canada has been working with other levels of government and industry partners to advance the competitiveness of Canada's tourism sector.
Every year, Rendez-vous Canada contributes to the delivery of the FTS by increasing awareness of Canada among international travelers. This year's event was attended by nearly 400 buyers from 22 countries. A record number of influential Canadian and international travel trade media also attended from international markets and from Canada (23 in all).
Rendez-vous Canada 2014 will be held May 27–30, 2014, in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Canadian Tourism Undergoing Healthy Growth
In 2012, Canadian tourism revenues grew by 4.2 percent, reaching a record $81.9 billion. At the same time, the number of tourism-related positions rose to 614,600. With this performance, Canada has gained global recognition, ranking 8th in the World Economic Forum's Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2013.
