- August 2011 — The Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy Canada (OSB) added a new section to its website to help educate the public and stakeholders on bankruptcy compliance. The section outlines the duties of an individual declaring bankruptcy, examines the consequences of abuse and fraudulent activity, addresses what to do if fraud is detected and presents examples of actual penal and criminal cases.
- Young Canadians Get Passionate About Science and Engineering Through Hands-On Learning
- August 2011 — The Government of Canada announced that it will provide $2.9 million over three years to 58 organizations that promote science and engineering to young Canadians through the 2011 competition of the PromoScience Program, an initiative of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

- Key Small Business Statistics
- July 2011 — Key Small Business Statistics is a semi-annual publication that provides information on the most frequently asked questions pertaining to Canadian small businesses. In Canada, 98% of businesses are considered small, and they employ 48% of the labour force. Updated sections include data on the number of businesses in Canada, job creation, firm survival, share of high-growth firms, earnings by business size, the number of self-employed workers, as well as the contribution of small businesses to Canada's gross domestic product and to exports.

- A Collaborative Fight Against Fraud
- March 4, 2011 — The Competition Bureau is Chair of the Fraud Prevention Forum, a group of over 100 private sector firms, consumer and volunteer groups, government agencies and law enforcement organizations concerned with fighting fraud aimed at consumers and businesses. Through its partners, the Forum works to prevent Canadians from becoming victims of fraud by educating them to recognize it, report it and stop it.

- Consultation on MOPOP Chapter 14: Unity of Invention
- February 24, 2011 — As part of the ongoing regular process of updating the Manual of Patent Office Practice (MOPOP), the draft revision of Chapter 14: Unity of Invention was released for public consultation February 7, 2011. Chapter 14 deals with the requirements for unity of invention and for the filing of divisional applications. The chapter has been revised to reinforce that Canadian standards for unity of invention are equivalent to standards under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), to clarify the dispute resolution mechanism in the case of an impasse regarding unity of invention, and to provide specific guidance to ensure a more consistent and predictable application of the correct standards.
Stakeholders may comment on the draft chapter until April 7, 2011.

- Researchers Discover a New Planet in Another Solar System
- January 18, 2011 — An international team of astronomers has discovered a fourth giant planet, named HR 8799e, outside our solar system. The new planet joins the three others that were the subjects of the first-ever images of a planetary family orbiting a star other than our sun. The planets orbit the star HR 8799, which lies about 129 light years from Earth and is faintly visible to the naked eye.

- January 18, 2011 — This report investigates how entrepreneurship is supported and delivered within Canadian Higher Education Institutions. The survey, conducted across Canadian universities and colleges, revealed that Canadian higher education institutions are active in offering entrepreneurship education as well as in providing a network of practitioners to support students interested in entrepreneurship. Two areas of concern were uneven access to entrepreneurship education across faculties and limited support for early-stage entrepreneurship on campus.

- Analysis of Regulatory Compliance Costs: Part II – Paperwork time burden, costs of paperwork compliance and paperwork simplification, December 2010
- January 18, 2011 — Using data from the 2005 and 2008 Statistics Canada Survey of Regulatory Compliance Costs, this paper examines several aspects of the burden red tape creates for businesses and sheds new light on elements such as paperwork time burden, productivity drag, total and average compliance costs, and paperwork simplification. The findings should help policy-makers gain a clearer understanding of the magnitude of the paperwork burden imposed on businesses and prove useful for developing meaningful reduction initiatives.
- Panel Seeking Views on Federal Support to Business R&D
- January 18, 2011 — The independent expert panel reviewing federal support to R&D has launched its consultation process and will be accepting written submissions until February 18, 2011. The Panel recently released a consultations document outlining questions to assist in its dialogue with Canadians. Consultations are a key component of the panel's work, which will ultimately culminate in advice on how the government can enhance the economic benefits stemming from its support for business R&D. The six-member panel was created last October to examine federal programs in support of business R&D and to identify opportunities for improvement, following through on a commitment made in Budget 2010. The panel's consultation paper and guidelines for submissions can be found by visiting www.rdreview-examenrd.ca.
