ICT Sector Employment, 2011 Estimates
ICT sector employment was estimated at almost 556,000 in 2011, an slight decrease of 0.4% over the 2010 level. The ICT sector accounted for 3.2% of Canadian employment, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point after remaining stable at 3.3% since 2007.
ICT manufacturing employment decreased slightly by 0.4% in 2011, to 80,950, it was the fourth decline in a row. The largest nominal change was a decrease of about 1,200 employees in the instruments industry from about 23,900 in 2010 to about 22,700 in 2011. Since 2002, employment in the manufacturing industries has dropped by 20%, an annual average decline of 2.4%.
ICT services employment decreased slightly by 0.3% in 2011, totalling to about 403,100 employees. This is the first annual decrease following three consecutive annual increases. The decline in services industries' employment was mainly attributed to a 1.0% drop in the computer systems design industry. Meanwhile, communications services employment increased by 1.2%. Since 2002, services industries' employment has grown by 8.4%, an average of 0.9% annually.
ICT wholesaling employment decreased by 1.1% in 2011, amounting to about 71,900 employees.
Overall, ICT sector employment has grown by 1.3% since 2002 or 0.1% on an annual basis.
