ICT Sector Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 2011 (in 2002 constant dollars)

In 2011, ICT sector GDP reached $62.7 billion, up 3.1% from 2010. The share of Canadian GDP attributable to the ICT sector remained at 4.9% in 2011.

The manufacturing sub–sector GDP was $8.8 billion in 2011, up 5.6% from 2010. For the second year in a row, all of the ICT manufacturing industries displayed positive growth in 2011, with the exception of the instruments industry, which declined slightly by 0.5%. The electronic components industry increased the fastest (23.8%) and posted the largest nominal gain ($163 million) in 2011. Over a longer period of time, the wireless communication equipment industry has grown the most, up by 188% since 2002, which represents an annual growth rate of 12.5%. Although it posted a meaningful growth of 5.2% in 2011, the wired communications equipment industry experienced the largest decline (–65%) since 2002.

The ICT services industries grew at a faster rate than the previous year, up 1.9% in 2011, to reach $48.6 billion in GDP. The computer systems design industry posted the fastest growth (3.2%) and had the largest nominal increase ($469 million) among the services industries. The computer systems design industry also accounted for 53% of the growth of the ICT services sub–sector in 2011. Communications services continues to be the largest ICT industry, representing 43% of ICT sector GDP 2011. However, the computer systems design industry is catching up, representing the second largest share of ICT sector GDP in 2011 (24%) .

The ICT wholesaling sub–sector's output increased by 10.9% in 2011, totalling $5.3 billion.

From 2002 to 2011, the ICT sector GDP grew at an annualized growth rate of 3.8%, compared to 1.9% for the overall economy.
