Technology Partnerships Canada has been a major enabler in every aspect of Sandvine's success to date.
Located in Waterloo, Ontario, Sandvine Inc. supplies Internet Service Providers (ISPs) with network equipment and software that enables them to be more profitable and make high-speed internet use more efficient for their customers. ISPs are companies that provide internet services through cable, telephone (DSL or Fibre-to-the-home), or wireless networks.
In 2003, Technology Partnerships Canada (TPC) invested $9.5 million to support the development of Sandvine's core technology, a project with a total cost of $25.7 million. TPC's investment helped Sandvine achieve the leverage it needed to move forward with its R&D project and meet its objectives.
Using this technology, Sandvine's products show ISPs how their networks are being used and by whom. For example, they can categorize usage by popular applications, such as video gaming, streaming media and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file sharing, as well as malicious traffic.
With this information, ISPs can predict future internet user patterns and use Sandvine's solutions to adapt their networks accordingly. This information also helps ISPs identify and respond to the future needs of their customers.
Initially, Sandvine proposed creating anti-virus software for internet users. Instead, they decided to incorporate this protection into a suite of products for network operators in order to remove the malicious traffic before it even reaches the customer.
For the past three years Sandvine has reported growth rates that exceed 100 percent. It counts 15 Canadian ISPs as customers as well as 10 of the 12 largest United States cable companies. Globally, they have over 100 customers in over 40 countries.
Sandvine received multiple awards for their product, which in 2007 included: the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2007; the 2007 Broadband Gear Report Diamond Award; and the Canadian Business Best Workplaces in Canada Award. It was also named the number one fastest-growing Canadian Tech company in Deloitte's Fast 50 award for 2007.
Sandvine's solutions make the company one of the most reliable and technologically-advanced companies that assist Internet Service Providers today.
