The Importance of Research and Development
Why invest in research and development?
Investing in research and development (R&D) promotes:
- Technology development within the Canadian economy;
- Collaboration with post-secondary institutions;
- Increased foreign and private sector investment in Canada; and
- Innovation and productivity.
Canada's Aerospace and Defence Industries
Canada's aerospace and defence (A&D) industries — made up of companies specializing in aerospace, defence, space and security technologies — are major investors in R&D and are recognized around the world for producing leading-edge products and services.
A&D industries are important economic drivers in all regions of the country with companies present in every province.
Collectively, they are also a significant player in the development of Canada's knowledge-based economy.
Strategic Aerospace and Defence Initiative
The Strategic Aerospace and Defence Initiative (SADI) provides repayable contributions to Canadian A&D companies for strategic industrial research and pre-competitive development, thereby:
- Supporting the development of next-generation A&D-related products and/or services;
- Building on existing Canadian strengths in A&D technology development;
- Enabling Canadian companies to participate in major platforms and supply chains; and
- Assisting the A&D industries to achieve Canada's international obligations (e.g., development programs supported by Canada).
All projects contracted through SADI are managed with the highest levels of accountability, transparency and due diligence.
Accelerating Innovation
What are the benefits to Canadians?
- These repayable contributions encourage much-needed Canadian private sector investment in R&D.
- R&D projects bring new or improved technologies to the forefront, benefiting companies in the supply chain that have participated in the project.
- Stimulating R&D attracts world-leading scientific and engineering talent in high-technology industries.
- These projects often result in exciting spinoff technologies in diverse sectors such as nanotechnology and information technology.
- Government support ensures that A&D companies continue to undertake R&D in Canada and that Canadians reap the benefits of these investments.
