Marketplace Monitoring
In order to effectively fulfill its mandate, Measurement Canada has developed the Marketplace Monitoring Program to ensure equitable and accurate trade measurement of goods and services. Monitoring of the marketplace may range from periodically assessing and confirming that existing controls remain adequate and appropriate, to direct intervention by Measurement Canada to maintain device accuracy and enforce compliance requirements.
Measurement Canada and Authorized Service Providers conduct inspections on devices being used in trade transactions to ensure compliance to the Weights and Measures and Electricity and Gas Inspection Acts.
The information collected during these inspections helps Measurement Canada:
- do periodic assessments of the accuracy of devices and commodity transactions within trade sectors;
- perform trade sector reviews to determine the level of intervention to maintain or increase marketplace equity;
- identify and address potential and actual problem areas; and
- take enforcement actions.
This allows Measurement Canada to maintain an independent presence in the marketplace to perform inspections, investigate complaints and disputes and monitor Authorized Service Providers' work and validate their compliance data.
