Gas Flow Metering Certification Laboratory

Overview

Measurement Canada’s natural gas flow certification services are delivered in accordance with the Electricity and Gas Inspection Act and Regulations.

Service requests

Standards certification can be carried out in the laboratory, on site and in situ. A completed Calibration Services Request form is required for these services.

Scope

Rotary Meters

  • Positive displacement, rotary piston: 0 – 283 m3/h using air and 0 – 10,000 ft3/h using air.
  • Method: Meters are certified in relation to one of three (Level 1) Master bell provers.
  • Measurement conditions:
    • Temperature: 20 ±2°C
    • Pressure: Ambient
  • Certification location: Measurement Canada Laboratory, Ottawa

Large Rotary Meter (Greater than 10,000 ft3/h)

Certificate is issued to an Authorized Service Provider by the laboratory based on data submitted as per Bulletin G-16 (Recognition of Test Data from Gas Meter Test Facilities).

Turbine Meters (All sizes)

Certificate is issued to an Authorized Service Provider by the laboratory based on data submitted as per Bulletin G-16 (Recognition of Test Data from Gas Meter Test Facilities).

Model 5 Transfer Proving System (0 – 283 m3/h using air and 0 – 10,000 ft3/h using air)

  • Method: Positive displacement certified in relation to Measurement Canada’s Reference Rotary Meter.
  • Measurement conditions:
    • Temperature: 20 ±2°C
    • Pressure: 100 ±10 kPa/h
  • Certification location: Measurement Canada Laboratory, Ottawa

Certification of Dimensional Determination of Bell Prover Displaced Volume (Strapping)

  • Master bell provers (Level 2): 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 ft3 displaced volume
  • Method: Bell provers are dimensionally certified using PI-tapes that are traceable to either the NRC or NIST.
  • Measurement conditions:
    • Temperature: Ambient
    • Pressure: Ambient
    • Humidity: Ambient
  • Certification location: Authorized Service Provider site or Measurement Canada district office
