Notification of Change in Measurement Canada Sealing Practice for Electricity and Gas Meters

The purpose of this message is to advise electricity and gas accredited meter verifiers, contractors, and meter owners of a change in Measurement Canada's sealing practice for electricity and gas meters.

Measurement Canada has recently changed the supplier for the seal tags used by Agency inspectors in securing sealing wire to verified meters. The new Measurement Canada seal tag is an aluminum-based product that will be crimped onto the sealing wires using pliers and dies that will stamp the Agency's identification (Canada Flag) and year of inspection upon application. The chosen seal type is similar in design and application to the seal type currently used by Agency inspectors in securing weighing and measuring devices.

Measurement Canada inspectors will begin to use the new seal tags as supplies and application equipment have been made available for use.

While the change in the seal type used by Measurement Canada does not require authorized service providers (ASPs) to change their sealing practice, ASPs must ensure at all times that the type of seal they use is adequate and complies with the requirements prescribed in Measurement Canada specification PS-EG-02: Provisional Specifications for the Means and Methods of Sealing Verified Electricity and Gas Meters (reference: section 7.0: Requirements for Sealing of Verified Meters).
