Part 4, section 33—Specialised test procedures—expansion space test (calibrated tanks)

This procedure is used when performing accuracy tests on any fixed, mobile or vehicle mounted tanks.

To verify that sufficient expansion space remains in the calibrated compartment when it is filled to the top capacity indicator.

Legislative references

Calibrate the compartment to the top indicator.

Position and seal the indicator.

Attempt to add product equal to 1% of the compartment capacity to the compartment.

Note: The compartment will overflow if sufficient space is not allowed. Care should be taken when adding this extra liquid. Following the test, the product must be drained to prevent overflow due to expansion.

Interpretation of results

A capacity indicator must not be installed so that the remaining space does not allow a volume at least equal to 1% of the tank nominal capacity.
