Terms and Conditions for the Approval of Coriolis Liquid Meters

Measurement Canada is launching a consultation on proposed changes to the Terms and Conditions for the Approval of Coriolis Liquid Meters that will be of primary interest to all those who play a role in the design, development, programming, installation, inspection or maintenance of Coriolis meters for trade purposes. The consultation period starts on June 27, 2012 and ends on August 11, 2012.

The purpose of the proposed changes is to:

  • establish the smallest quantity that a retail dispenser for automotive or petroleum liquids must be capable of measuring within the applicable limit of error;
  • establish a definition and formula for minimum quantity deviation to determine a minimum limit of error that may be applied;
  • remove reference to "initial inspection" under the limit of error section to more closely align with the definitions in the Weights and Measures Regulations for the application of acceptance and in-service limits of error;
  • removed requirement to conduct electrical interference testing with test spikes superimposed on the main power supply and susceptibility to radiated interference testing at frequencies of 27 MHz and 460 MHz;
  • establish a low-flow cut-off value that may be set based on the minimum flow rate of the meter;
  • exempt Coriolis meters from requiring a filter/strainer, contrary to section 277 of the Weights and Measures Regulations; and
  • clarify the accuracy class table for liquefied gasses and cryogenic liquids.

Measurement Canada is soliciting general comments from stakeholders in regards to the proposed changes. Please forward comments in writing to the undersigned by August 11, 2012.
