Measuring prepackaged firewood

Measuring prepackaged firewood (infographic)
Long description of the infographic

Prepackaged firewood can be sold in a variety of ways, including in

  • bags or boxes
  • strapped
  • stacked in a rectangular or cylindrical shape

If it is bagged or boxed, make sure:

  • the individual pieces are parallel to each other
  • there are as few gaps as possible

If it is strapped, ensure the strap is tight so there are as few gaps as possible.

Measure the firewood

If measured in centimetres (cm)

  1. multiply the width by height by length
  2. divide the result by 1 000 to get cubic decimetres

For example:

120 cm × 60 cm × 60 cm = 432 000 cm3 = 432 dm3

If measured in inches (in)

  1. multiply the width by height by length
  2. divide the result by 61.024 to get cubic decimetres (dm3)

If sold strapped in a cylindrical shape

  1. measure the diameter (D) and length (L)
  2. use the formula: D2 × L × 0.7854
  3. if measured in inches, divide by 61.024 to convert from cubic inches to cubic decimetres
  4. if measured in centimetres, divide by 1 000 to convert from cubic centimetres to cubic decimetres
