Philosophy of Care:
Create an open, positive environment that encourages children to reach their potential. Build confidence and understanding by encouraging each child to share his/her unique talents and cultural heritage.
Exemplary Practices:
Special heritage days give children opportunity to share their culture with others. On those special days, children are asked to dress in traditional costumes, and to bring ethnic dishes and music to school. They can also teach students to say a few words in their traditional languages.
Weekly visits to four local senior centres, as well as field trips to the fire station, library, pet store and even the dry cleaners - help make learning meaningful and fun for children.
Mrs. Kelly ensures children with special needs fully participate in all activities. She has adapted materials, such as pictures, books and teaching charts, as well as tools such as paintbrushes so children with special needs can easily access them.
Dedicated to her students, Mrs. Kelly is also equally committed to both her community and her profession. In her 25 years at the daycare, she has played a vital role, including leading a project to convert an unused portion of nearby church property into additional playground space. She has also given workshops at local colleges, and has helped train and mentor young educators completing internships at the daycare.
