Teaching Approach:
- The acceptance of one's responsibilities ensures one's freedoms.
- Encourage students to take risks in the controlled setting of school, where the cost of failure is not too exorbitant.
Outstanding Achievements:
Fosters a thirst for learning and develops self-confidence in students by assigning research that students must do and then present to the class in the form of an oral and PowerPoint presentation. Students learn to assess the problem, look for plausible solutions, select the most appropriate solution, present their findings and correct or modify their conclusions and presentation according to class and teacher feedback.
Creates a dynamic hands-on approach to chemistry education that attracts students to his classes and elicits their best work once there. Provides pragmatic and realistic applications of chemistry to the real world (for example, his students create aromatic spearmint compounds while the next door biology class is engaged in the smelly work of dissecting fetal pigs), uses humour to ensure attendance and attention (late students must sing I'm a Little Teapot with actions) and balances theoretical learning with practical learning through lab work and field trips.
Organizes, fund-raises and leads extremely popular field, foreign travel and hiking trips that open students' eyes to the wider world, teach scientific principles, historical understanding or simply a love of physical activity and the outside world with lasting benefit.
