Teaching Approach:

  • Use creativity, knowledge of the curriculum and an understanding of young learners to create a child-centred learning environment.
  • Adapt materials and teaching to suit special needs.

Outstanding Achievements:

  • Helps students facing extra challenges posed by autism, Down's syndrome, Asperger's syndrome and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder to become comfortable with the school environment and to succeed in it. Works closely with their parents, involving them in their children's learning and giving them guidance they can use to help their children develop learning skills.
  • As one of the first to learn about the new social sciences curriculum, Mrs. Shukin helped organize the primary teachers in-service to prepare for it. She connected this new curriculum to global initiatives such as Roofs for the Roofless in India.

Rave Reviews:

"Within the first month, my son was having some difficulty with patterns in math. I received a well thought out note that explained his area of difficulty and gave me instruction, including aids on the Internet, along with a bag with various shapes in it, so I could support him at home. We were able to fix the "problem" before things got worse and I got a pleasant surprise on his first report card." Parent

"Although our son has moved on to Grade 4 and another teacher, Mrs. Shukin continues to monitor his progress and provide suggestions and encouragement for our son, his teacher and ourselves." Parents
