Subjects and Grades Taught: Social studies in Grades 9 and 12

Teaching Approach:

  • Recognize that many students are visual and auditory learners and plan lessons with that in mind.
  • See the other side. Students, for example, were given exemplar essays and asked to grade them, comment on them and then compare their findings with students of another social studies class.

Outstanding Achievements:

  • Assembled an interactive museum of artifacts related to the social studies, ranging from items used in modern warfare to period newspapers.
  • Co-authored Perspectives on Globalization and Living in a Globalized World (Oxford University Press), texts Grade 10 students across Alberta use. He also co-authored Perspectives on Nationalism and was the lead author of Understandings in Ideology, both of which will be published in 2008 and are intended for Grade 11 and Grade 12 social studies courses, respectively.

Rave Reviews:

"Ultimately, Mr. Yoshida's goal has been to create responsible citizens-citizens who are actively engaged in democratic society." School superintendent

"Another thing that makes Mr. Yoshida such an exceptional teacher is his ability to lecture on an issue and by the end of it you still have no idea of his personal position on that issue. He gives both sides of every argument so equally convincing and in depth that you find yourself being pulled around for the whole lecture." Student
