Teaching Approach:

  • Advocate for new and different programs that are in the best interests of students and the community.
  • Pay painstaking attention to detail, especially to safety details, when designing and implementing programs.

Outstanding Achievements:

  • Created the adventure tourism program at Ballenas Secondary, now in its 14th year. The program offers students certification and experience in a variety of outdoor adventure tourism businesses. The program has also benefited employers in this emerging field.
  • Students make regular use of snowcams, wavecams and other weather-forecasting technology as they prepare to assess surfing, kayaking, snowboarding and boating conditions, and learn how to use GPS and emergency transmitter technology. This knowledge helps students prepare to safely operate adventure-tourism businesses in the rapidly changing marine conditions on the West Coast.

Rave Reviews:

"As a small business owner and employer, it is great to share our passion with these kids and later have them come work with us." Adventure tourism operator

"Mr. Halverson is not a man who seeks the spotlight. He goes about his business in a quiet, focussed manner that often deflects credit to others. Yet his accomplishments must be recognized, as he is the provincial leader in this field of endeavour." School superintendent
