Teaching Approach

  • Technology is not the answer for everything, but when it is the right tool, use it.
  • Never let technology or recent trends distract from essential skills, especially literacy skills.

Outstanding Achievements

  • Shared her experience as an early literacy teacher by inviting many others to see and learn the techniques she uses. Also teaches courses, both face-to-face and online, for teachers seeking additional primary basic qualifications.
  • Key organizer and teaching team member behind the "Passionate Earthlings"club. Named after Roberta Bondar's self-description, the club gives students from Grade 1 to 8 a chance to pursue learning outside the curriculum. This past year, Ms. Johnston led the naturalist portion of the club.

Rave Reviews

"She is making an extraordinary difference for students through a wide circle of influence-her own direct teaching excellence and her impact on the teaching practice of countless educators who visit her classroom, attend her university courses or use her published curriculum materials." Parent

"From the very first visit, I could see what a rich teaching and learning environment this was, not only for the young teacher candidate placed under her tutelage, but also for Ms. Johnston's Grade 3 students. Her teacher candidate's skills were nourished and quickly flourished to a high level of expertise, unusual for a student teacher." Colleague
