Subjects and Grades Taught: Advanced Placement, advanced and academic stream biology in grades 11 and 12
Jason Fuller’s tremendous passion for biology is evident to his students. He tries to get them equally excited about what they are learning and encourages them to explore the subject on their own. When students do not understand something, he works with them to ensure that it is only an obstacle for them to get around rather than a barrier to learning. With so many hot topics making the headlines in biology, Mr. Fuller stays current by learning alongside his students.
Teaching Approach
Mr. Fuller, who has been teaching for eight years, takes an activity-based, hands-on approach to teaching biology through experiments, investigations and labs. He impresses upon students the importance of biology to everyday life in a fun, non-threatening learning environment. He also stresses the importance of students’ developing hands-on, people and teamwork skills, as well as scientific literacy.
Outstanding Achievements
- Mr. Fuller manages, moderates and delivers a virtual Advanced Placement biology course based on the classroom course already taught at Horton High. The virtual course is available to students throughout the Annapolis Valley, many of whom would not be otherwise able to take it. Mr. Fuller delivers the lectures using an on-line video-conferencing program called Marratech that has audio, visual, text messaging and whiteboard functions, and manages course content using Moodle and a personal website. Mr. Fuller further supports his lectures with other web-based tools such as blogs, chat rooms and podcasts.
- Mr. Fuller helps his students succeed by giving them firm learning targets to strive for and by actively involving students in assessment. His Advance Placement biology students have matched or exceeded global averages in a number of assessment categories, and the average grades in his other biology courses have increased several percentage points from one year to the next.
