The feature article in the August issue highlights a report which examines the collaborative research and development, and commercialization strategies of five companies. The five case studies exhibit two categories of collaboration, "research push," which includes spinoffs from university laboratories and contract research, and "commercial-pull" which includes sponsored research, and joint ventures. The report found that most commercialization stems from "commercial pull," where customer relationships are fundamental to identifying innovative opportunities. The study also illustrated that firms reported a lack of financing between launching a spinoff and commencement of revenue flows, which impedes on the process of commercialization.
