Technical Standards and Procedures for Digital Radio Broadcasting (DRB)

Industry Canada announces the publication of Broadcasting Procedures and Rules, Part I (BPR-I)Issue 2 and Broadcasting Procedures and Rules, Part V (BPR-V)- Issue 1. The first document sets forth the Department's requirements for obtaining Broadcasting Certificates, including DRB, and the second outlines the technical standards and operational requirements for Digital Radio Broadcasting undertakings. BPR-I and V were gazetted for public comment in Gazette Notice SMBR-002-96 on July 20, 1996.

Broadcasting Procedures and Rules, Part 1, Issue 2 will supersede the existing Broadcasting Procedures and Rules, Part 1, dated April 1992 and all its subsequent amendments. Broadcasting Procedures and Rules, Part V, Issue 1 is a new document.

Digital Radio Broadcasting is a wide-band digital transmission system adopted in Canada as an eventual replacement for AM and FM analog sound broadcasting and was the subject of Canada Gazette SMBR-005-95, "System Standard for Digital Radio Broadcasting (DRB) in Canada", published on November 25, 1995. On June 15, 1996, Industry Canada announced the publication of the Allotment Plan for Digital Radio Broadcasting (DRB), Issue 1, for undertakings operating within the 1,452 to 1,492 MHz frequency band (L-band) using the EUREKA 147 (DAB) system.
