System Standard for Digital Radio Broadcasting (DARS ) in Canada

On August 5, 1995, Industry Canada issued gazette notice SMBR-003-95 proposing the adoption of the EUREKA-147 (DAB) system as the Canadian system standard for Digital Radio Broadcasting (DARS ) services in the frequency band 1452-1492 MHz. The Department invited the public to comment on the proposal within 60 days from the date of publication of the above notice.

The Department received submissions from the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB), the Radio Advisory Board of Canada (RABC) and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). All comments supported the adoption of the proposed DARS system noting that the broadcasting industry needed a system standard that would provide significant improvement in sound quality, service reliability and data capacity over present analog transmission systems.

In view of the above, Industry Canada hereby announces the adoption of the EUREKA-147 (DAB) as the Canadian system standard for DARS services in the frequency band 1452-1492 MHz.
