Proposed Spectrum Policy for Licence Exempt Wireless Local Area Networks in the 5 GHz Range

Introduction

The purpose of this Notice is to invite public comments on spectrum policy proposals for the introduction of new Licence Exempt wireless Local Area Networks (LE-LANs) in the frequency bands 5150–5250 MHz, 5250–5350 MHz and 5725–5825 MHz. These bands may support a wide range of innovative LE-LAN system and device applications. Of particular interest is the provisioning of wireless LAN facilities to users of the information highway for a variety of applications such as high-speed computer connections and the delivery of multimedia services.

A document entitled Proposed Spectrum Policy for Licence Exempt Wireless Local Area Networks in the 5 GHz Range is available for public comment. These comments will provide the basis for the development of spectrum policy provisions and technical standards.

A diversity of wireless access facilities is playing an important role in Canada's development of a world-class information infrastructure. Accordingly, Industry Canada will pursue its policy formulation activity regarding LE-LANs taking into account the objectives of "connectedness" as enunciated in the Speech from the Throne,

Invitation to Comment

Industry Canada invites interested and affected parties to provide their views and comments on the above referenced policy document.

Submissions should be addressed to the

and must be received on or before to receive full consideration. All representations should cite the Canada Gazette Part I, Notice publication date, title, and the Notice reference number.

Written comments received in response to this Notice will be made available for viewing by the public, two weeks after the closing date of this Notice, during normal business hours, at the Industry Canada Library, 235 Queen Street, West Tower, 3rd Floor, Ottawa, and at the offices of Industry Canada in Moncton, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver, for a period of one year from the close of the comment period.
