Notice No. DGTP-008-2006Petition to the Governor in Council Concerning Telecom Decision CRTC 2006-9

Notice is hereby given that a petition from Barrett Xplore Inc. has been received by the Governor in Council (GIC) under section 12 of the Telecommunications Act with respect to the following decision issued by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) Telecom Decision CRTC 2006-9, Disposition of funds in the deferral accounts. The petitioners request that the GIC stay portions of Telecom Decision CRTC 2006-9 and grant relief in respect of the allocation of funds to expand broadband services. The request is based on several reasons included in the petition.

In Telecom Decision CRTC 2006-9, the CRTC provided the guidelines for the disposition of funds remaining in the deferral accounts of the large incumbent telephone companies. The CRTC determined that initiatives to expand broadband services to rural and remote communities and to improve accessibility to telecommunications services for persons with disabilities are appropriate uses of these funds.
