Action Taken Against Unauthorized Ottawa Broadcast Station For Non-Compliance

Ottawa, January 15, 2010 — Industry Canada has taken action against an unauthorized FM broadcast station that had been operating at 91.9 megahertz in the southwest part of the city of Ottawa. Spectrum Management Officers and the RCMP entered the premises on January 15, 2010, and seized equipment associated with the operation of the illegal radio station.

This action was taken after exhausting all attempts to obtain voluntary compliance with the Radiocommunication Act.

All radiocommunication and broadcasting facilities in Canada must be installed and operated in compliance with regulations under the Radiocommunication Act and the Broadcasting Act, as well as with Health Canada’s safety guidelines for exposure to radio frequency fields. At the time of writing, the operator of this station has not sought this authorization.

Enforcement actions undertaken in this situation could result in penalties under the Radiocommunication Act. Specifics of this investigation cannot be discussed while it is before the courts.
