TDO Help - Industry Search

Keyword Search

The Keyword search is applied against industry descriptions for industries classified according to the Canadian implementation of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).

The search is applied against the NAICS name and against a thesaurus of synonyms and related terms.

Steps for Performing a Keyword Search

  1. A new screen will appear when the Keyword Search option is activated in the main panel.
  2. A search box will appear below a set of instructions. This is where keywords are entered. Click on "Search" afterwards to activate.
  3. Keyword search is not case-sensitive and not sensitive to accentuated characters. Logical operators (such as "AND", "OR" and "NOT") may be employed.
  4. A picklist of results will appear in the search results area below the search box. The number of records retrieved will also be indicated. Until the search is activated, the search results box will display either the message "Search criteria not specified" or the results from the last search you performed.
  5. A selection is made by highlighting an item in the search results area and clicking on the button "Add Codes to Selection List". This will transfer the item to the selected codes area displayed below. Multiple selections are possible (see below).
  6. The selected codes area will display your active selection list. Items can be removed by highlighting and clicking on the button "Delete Codes from Selection List" below. Multiple selections are possible (see below).
  7. Important: In order to run a report or graph for the items in your selection list, you must click on the button "Accept Selection and Return to Main Panel" in order to proceed. If you exit without clicking on this button your selection will not be retained.

To make multiple selections:

You can select or deselect highlighted items by clicking them again while holding down the key appropriate for your platform:

  • On Windows PC, hold down the "Ctrl" key while clicking on the items you desire.
  • On a Macintosh, use the "Shift" key.

Code Search

The Code Search is applied against the numeric 3, 4, 5 and 6 digit NAICS codes for industries classified according to the Canadian North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).

This option is most useful for those already familiar with the codes used in the NAICS classification.

Steps for Performing a Code Search

  1. A new screen will appear when the "Code Search" option is activated in the main panel.
  2. A search box will appear below a set of instructions. This is where numeric codes are entered. Click on "Search" afterwards to activate.
  3. Code search is limited to a maximum of 6-digits, but partial codes, code ranges and the OR operator (to built a list) can be used as described in more detail below.
  4. A picklist of results will appear in the search results area. The number of records retrieved will also be indicated. Until the search is activated, the search results box will display either the message "Search criteria not specified" or the results from the last search you performed.
  5. A selection is made by highlighting an item in the "Search Results" area and clicking on the button "Add Codes to Selection List" below. This will transfer the item to the list of "Selected Codes". Multiple selections are possible (see below).
  6. The "Selected Codes" area will display your active selection list.

Code Search Options

  • Partial codes are allowed. For example, entering "322" will return all the NAICS codes that begin with these digits (i.e. the codes of subsector 322).
  • A range of codes may be entered using the ":" as an operator. For example, entering:

will return a picklist with the codes from subsector 323 to subsector 326.

  • A list of codes may also be specified using the "OR" operator. For example, entering

will return a picklist with the NAICS codes in industry groups 3255, 3261 and 3271.

  • Use of the AND and NOT operators is disabled in the code search.

Browse List

The Browse List option allows you to select industries by displaying a complete list of all the NAICS codes in the Canadian implementation of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).

Using this method, it is possible for you to choose not only specific NAICS codes, but also entire sectors (e.g. Sector 31-33 - Manufacturing ), which is useful for a more aggregate view of the statistics for various industry sectors.

Steps for Using the Browse List Option

  1. A new screen will appear when the "Browse List" option is activated in the main panel.
  2. A selection box will appear below a set of instructions. This will display the various sectors, subsectors and industry groups of NAICS Canada.

    There are two options:

    • Adding entire NAICS sectors, subsectors or industry groups to the selection list, by highlighting and clicking on the button "Add Codes to Selection List" below.
    • Highlighting a specific sector, subsector or industry group and clicking on the button "Drilldown to Next Level" to display a complete list of the individual 5 and 6-digit NAICS codes in these groupings. This is the lowest level of aggregation.
  3. When the "Drilldown to Next Level" option is chosen, the picklist of 5 and 6-digit NAICS codes will appear in the search results area. The number of records retrieved will also be indicated. Until the search is activated, the search results box will display either the message "Search criteria not specified" or the results from the last search you performed.
  4. A selection of one or more codes is made by highlighting an item in the search results area and clicking on the button "Add Codes to Selection List" below. This will transfer the item to the list of selected codes. Multiple selections are possible (see below).
  5. The "Selected Codes" area will display your active selection list. Items can be removed by highlighting and clicking on the button "Delete Codes from Selection List" below. Multiple selections are possible (see below).
  6. The "Selected Codes" area can thus display individual 5 or 6-digit NAICS codes as well as entire sectors, subsectors or industry groups, creating a variety of possible combinations. When there is a clear conflict between selections (e.g. selecting a 5 or 6-digit code when the entire subsector to which it belongs has already been selected), a warning will appear to prevent double-counting.
  7. Important: In order to run a report or graph for the items in your selection list, you must click on the button "Accept Selection and Return to Main Panel" in order to proceed. If you exit without clicking on this button your selection will not be retained.

To make multiple selections

You can select or deselect highlighted items by clicking them again while holding down the key appropriate for your platform:
