Technology Roadmap for Intelligent Buildings: Highlights
The Context
An Intelligent Building is one equipped with the telecommunications infrastructure that enables it to continuously respond and adapt to changing conditions, allowing for a more efficient use of resources and increasing the comfort and security of its occupants. Intelligent Buildings provide these benefits through automated control systems such as: heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning; fire safety; security; and energy/lighting management.
The Objective
To develop and implement collaborative activity amongst all stakeholders to grow the Canadian Intelligent Building Technology industry.
Key Participants
- Industry: Continental Automated Building Association (CABA), Bell Canada, Honeywell, Hydro-Québec, IBM, Nortel Networks, Siemens, Tridel Corp.
- Government: Industry Canada, Public Works and Government Services Canada, National Research Council, Natural Resources Canada, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation
Benefits and Key Results
- Formed Intelligent and Integrated Buildings Council (IIBC) to assist with Roadmap implementation.
- Five Task Forces established to address challenges identified in the Roadmap.
- Developed a White Paper to describe and explain the various protocols used in the business automation industry.
- Wrote and published "The Best Practices Guide for Intelligent Buildings Technologies".
