English Abstract


Described are various embodiments of a mobile subscriber system, mobile
communication device and mobile network authentication and virtualized
smartphone
service access system and method therefor. In some embodiments, mobile network

authentication consists of a first user-agnostic communication device
authentication
identifying the communication device as registered with a designated mobile
subscriber
network, and a subsequent user-specific authentication using one such network-
authenticated
devices via a data network access point of the designated subscriber
network.

CLAIMS
What is claimed is:
1. A mobile communication device for use over a mobile communication
network,
the device comprising:
a graphical user interface;
a processor;
a mobile transceiver operable to communicate with the mobile communication
network;
a computer-readable authentication medium registered to a designated mobile
network operator and compatible with authentication in the mobile
communication
network such that said authentication medium is automatically authenticated in
the
mobile communication network as being registered with said designated mobile
network
operator to gain restricted mobile data access over the mobile communication
network to
a designated mobile data network access point; and
a memory with a client application stored therein, said client application
including
instructions for implementation by said processor to access and communicate
user
identification data via said restricted mobile data access for authentication
as
corresponding to a given subscriber account with said designated mobile
network
operator, and thereby authorize the mobile communication device access to one
or more
data network services operable via said graphical user interface through said
designated
data network access point while tracking data usage associate therewith via
said given
subscriber account.
2. The mobile communication device of claim 1, wherein said computer-
readable
authentication medium is selected from the group consisting of a Subscriber
Identification Module (SIM card), a Universal Subscriber Identity Module (USIM
card),
a Removable User Identity Module (R-UIM card) and a Universal Integrated
Circuit
Card (UICC).

3. The mobile communication device of claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said
computer-
readable authentication medium is configured to prohibit any other mobile
communications over the mobile communication network beyond those directed
through
said designated data network access point.
4. The mobile communication device of claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said
client
application includes instructions for implementation by said processor to
prohibit any
other mobile communications over the mobile communication network beyond those

directed through said designated data network access point.
5. The mobile communication device of any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein,
absent
successful user identification data authentication, all mobile communications
over the
mobile communication network are prohibited.
6. The mobile communication device of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein
said one
or more data network applications comprise a softphone application emulating
one or
more mobile telephony functions over the mobile communication network via said

designated network access point.
7. The mobile communication device of claim 6, wherein said softphone
application
is centrally implemented on an application server accessible via said data
network access
point.
8. The mobile communication device of claim 7, wherein said softphone
application
further provides remote user access to at least one of centralized voicemail,
a centralized
call history, and a centralized phone contact listing maintained in
association with said
application server against said given user account.
9. The mobile communication device of any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein
said one
or more data network applications comprise a telephony application operated,
at least in
part, via a user-specific telephone number associated with said given user
account.

10. The mobile communication device of claim 9, wherein said telephony
application
comprises at least one of a voice-over-data application and an SMS-over-data
application.
11. The mobile communication device of any one of claims 1 to 10, wherein
said one
or more data network applications comprise an accounting function providing
remote
user access to a current mobile data usage indication associated with said
given user
account.
12. The mobile communication device of any one of claims 1 to 11, wherein
said user
identification data is manually enterable via said graphical user interface.
13. The mobile communication device of any one of claims 1 to 12, wherein
said
computer-readable authentication medium is user agnostic in operation.
14. A system for a mobile network operator to provide a registered
subscriber access
to mobile telephony services over a mobile communication network using
distinct mobile
communication devices, the system comprising:
one or more servers accessible via a designated mobile data network access
point
and executing a user authentication engine and a virtualized mobile telephony
application;
a plurality of computer-readable authentication media each registered with the

mobile network operator and compatible with authentication in the mobile
communication network, wherein each of said authentication media, when
operatively
coupled to a given one of the distinct mobile communication devices in
operation, is
automatically authenticated in the mobile communication network as being
registered
with the mobile network operator to authorize said given mobile communication
device
restricted mobile data access over the mobile communication network to said
one or more
servers via said designated mobile data network access point;
a thin client application executable on any said given mobile communication
device to access and communicate subscriber identification data over said
restricted


mobile data access for authentication by said authentication engine as
corresponding to a
registered subscriber account with the mobile network operator, and thereby
authorize
any said given mobile communication device, post subscriber authentication,
access to
said virtualized mobile telephony application interactively implemented via
said mobile
data network access point while tracking mobile data usage by said virtualized
mobile
telephony application against said registered subscriber account.
15. The system of claim 14, wherein said computer-readable authentication
medium
is selected from the group consisting of a Subscriber Identification Module
(SIM card), a
Universal Subscriber Identity Module (USIM card), a Removable User Identity
Module
(R-UIM card) and a Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC).
16. The system of claim 14 or claim 15, wherein said computer-readable
authentication medium is configured to prohibit any other mobile
communications over
the mobile communication network beyond those directed through said designated
data
network access point.
17. The system of claim 14 or claim 15, wherein said thin client is
executable to
prohibit any other mobile communications over the mobile communication network

beyond those directed through said designated data network access point.
18. The system of any one of claims 14 to 17, wherein, absent successful
user
identification data authentication, all mobile communications over the mobile
communication network are prohibited.
19. The system of any one of claims 14 to 18, wherein said virtualized
telephony
application comprises a softphone application emulating one or more mobile
telephony
functions over the mobile communication network via said designated network
access
point.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein said softphone application further
provides
remote user access to at least one of centralized voicemail, a centralized
call history, and
a centralized phone contact listing maintained in association with said one or
more
servers against said registered user account.
21. The system of any one of claims 14 to 20, wherein said virtualized
telephony
application is operated, at least in part, via a user-specific telephone
number associated
with said registered subscriber account.
22. The system of claim 21, wherein said telephony application comprises at
least one
of a voice-over-data application and an SMS-over-data application.
23. The system of any one of claims 14 to 22, wherein said one or more
servers
execute an accounting function providing remote subscribers access via said
thin client
application to a current mobile data usage indication associated with said
registered
subscriber account.
24. The system of any one of claims 14 to 23, wherein said subscriber
identification
data is manually enterable via said thin client application.
25. The system of any one of claims 14 to 24, wherein said computer-
readable
authentication medium is user agnostic in operation.
26. A mobile network authentication method for authorizing a communication
device
access to mobile network services via an available mobile network connection,
the
method comprising:
enabling authentication of the mobile communication device as being registered

to a designated mobile subscriber network providing the mobile network
services to
subscribers thereto;

allowing the mobile communication device restricted access via said available
mobile network connection to a designated data network access point of said
designated
mobile subscriber network as a result of said device authentication;
executing subscriber authentication via said designated data network access
point
as a function of input subscriber credentials; and
authorizing subscriber access to the mobile network services subject to
successful
subscriber authentication via said designated data network access point.
27. The method of claim 26, wherein said device authentication consists of
a user-
agnostic authentication.
28. The method of claim 27, wherein said user-agnostic authentication is
implemented as a function of a user-agnostic computer-readable authentication
medium
operably associated with the mobile communication device.
29. The method of claim 28, wherein said user-agnostic computer-readable
authentication medium is selected from the group consisting of a Subscriber
Identification Module (SIM card), a Universal Subscriber Identity Module (USIM
card),
a Removable User Identity Module (R-UIM card) and a Universal Integrated
Circuit
Card (UICC), that is registered to or issued by said designated mobile
subscriber network.
30. The method of any one of claims 26 to 29, wherein the available mobile
network
connection consists of one of a home network connection directly supported by
said
designated mobile subscriber network and a roaming network connection
indirectly
supported by said designated mobile subscriber network via a predefined mobile
network
roaming agreement.
