The present invention relates to a bipolar plate as well as to a method for
its production.
The bipolar plate preferably comprises at least two layers (2, 3) with at
least two layers (2,3)
comprising each at least a first and a second indentation/protrusion, where
the first
indentation/protrusion (2a) of the first layer (2) and the first
indentation/protrusion (3a) of
the second layer (3) in a completely positioned state of the layers (2, 3)
engage with each
other and contact each other in the plane E1 with positive fit. The second
indentation/protrusion (2b) of the first layer (2) and the second
indentation/protrusion (3b)
of the second layer (3) engage with each other in a completely positioned
state of the layers
(2,3) and contact each other in the plane E2 only in sections in at least two
sections (30b,
31b). The contact portions (30b, 31b) are arranged on both sides of a virtual
straight line(5b),
which extends in the main direction of the indentation/protrusion (3b) in the
second layer
(3). No positive fit between the interlocking second indentations/protrusions
(2b, 3b) results
in the area of the second contact area (23).
The invention allows a fast, cost efficient and tailored production of bipolar
plates.

What is claimed is:


1. Method for the production of a bipolar plate (1)
where in each of at least two layers (2, 3) at least a first and a second
indentation/protrusion
(2a, 2b, 3a, 3b) are formed, and
the layers (2, 3) are positioned one on top of the other,
characterized in that the first indentation/protrusion (2a) of the first layer
(2) and the first
indentation/protrusion (3a) of the second layer (3) in a completely positioned
state of the
layers (2, 3) engage with each other and contact each other with a positive
fit in plane E1
and that
the second indentation/protrusion (2b) of the first layer (2) and the second
indentation/protrusion (3b) of the second layer (3) in a completely positioned
state of the
layers (2, 3) engage with each other and contact each other in the plane E2
only in sections
in at least two sections (30b, 31b),
where the contact sections (30b, 31b) are arranged in such a manner that they
are situated
on both sides of a virtual straight line (5b), which extends in the main
direction of the
second indentation/protrusion (3b) of the second layer (3) and where no
positive fit is
established between the second indentations/protrusions (2b, 3b) and
where these layers (2, 3) are joined to each other by means of adhesive
bonding while the
indentations/protrusions of at least one layer are nested in complementary
protrusions/indentations (6c, 6f) of a fixation device (6).

2. Method for the production of a bipolar plate (1)
where in each of at least two layers (2', 3') at least a first, a second and a
third
indentation/protrusion (2a', 2b', 2c', 3a', 3b', 3c') are formed and
the layers (2', 3') are positioned one on top of the other,
characterized in that the first indentation/protrusion (2a') of the first
layer (2') and the first
indentation/protrusion (3a') of the second layer (3) , the second
indentation/protrusion (2b')
of the first layer (2') and the second indentation/protrusion (3b') of the
second layer (3) as
well as the third indentation/protrusion (2c') of the first layer (2') and the
third
indentation/protrusion (3c') of the second layer (3) in a completely
positioned state of the
layers (2', 3') engage with each other and in planes E2, E3 and E4,
respectively, contact each
other only in sections in at least two sections (30a', 31a, 30b', 31b', 30c',
31c'),
where the contact sections (30a', 31a', 30b', 31b', 30c, 31c') are arranged in
such a manner
that they are situated on both sides of virtual straight lines (5a, 5b, 5c),
which extend in the
main direction of the respective indentation/protrusion (3a', 3b', 3c') of the
second layer (3)
and where no positive fit is established between the corresponding
indentations/protrusions
(2a'/3a', 2b'/ 3b' and 2c'/3c'),
where the first and second straight lines (5a, 5b) extend under an angle of -
10° to 10° to
each other and where the third straight line (5c) extends under an angle of
80° to 100° to the
first and second straight lines (5a, 5b),
where the layers (2, 3) are joined to each other by an adhesive bonding method
while the
indentations/protrusions of at least one layer are nested in complementary
protrusions/indentations (6f) of a fixation device (6).

3. Method according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that in at least two
layers (2, 3, 2', 3') a
channel structure (4) is formed in the same step with the
indentations/protrusions (2a, 2a',
2b, 2b', 2c', 3a, 3a', 3b, 3b', 3c').

4. Method according to one of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that at least
one
indentation/protrusion (2a, 2a', 2b, 2b', 2c', 3a, 3a', 3b, 3b', 3c')
comprises a through
opening (2ax, 2ax', 2bx, 2bx', 2cx', 3ax, 3ax', 3bx, 3bx', 3cx'), through
which a centring bolt
(6a, 6d) of the fixation device (6) engages.

5. Method according to one of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that the layers
(2, 3) are made
from metal and preferably consist of steel.

6. Method according to one of claims 1 to 5, characterized in that the joining
method is
gluing or welding, preferably laser welding.

7. Method according to one of claims 1 to 6, characterized in that the
indentations/protrusions (2a, 2a', 2b, 2b', 2c', 3a, 3a', 3b, 3b', 3c') and/or
the channel
structures (4) are formed through embossing, deep drawing, hydroforming,
adiabatic
forming or roll forming.

8. Bipolar plate (1) comprising at least two layers (2, 3)
where at least two layers (2, 3) each comprise at least a first and a second
indentation/protrusion (2a, 2b, 3a, 3b),
wherein the first indentation/protrusion (2a) of the first layer (2) and the
first
indentation/protrusion (3a) of the second layer (3) in a completely positioned
state of the
layers (2, 3) engage with each other and contact each other with a positive
fit in plane E1
and that
the second indentation/protrusion (2b) of the first layer (2) and the second
indentation/protrusion (3b) of the second layer (3) in a completely positioned
state of the
layers (2, 3) engage with each other and contact each other in the plane E2
only in sections
in at least two sections (30b, 31b),
where the contact sections (30b, 31b) are arranged in such a manner that they
are situated
on both sides of a virtual straight line (5b), which extends in the main
direction of the second
indentation/protrusion (3b) of the second layer (3) and where no positive fit
is established
between the second indentations/protrusions (2b, 3b)

9. Bipolar plate (1) comprising at least two layers (2', 3')
where at least two layers (2', 3') comprise at least a first, a second and a
third
indentation/protrusion (2a', 2b', 2c', 3a', 3b', 3c')
wherein the first indentation/protrusion (2a') of the first layer (2') and the
first
indentation/protrusion (3a') of the second layer (3), the second
indentation/protrusion (2b')
of the first layer (2') and the second indentation/protrusion (3b') of the
second layer (3) as
well as the third indentation/protrusion (2c') of the first layer (2') and the
third
indentation/protrusion (3c') of the second layer (3) in a completely
positioned state of the
layers (2', 3') engage with each other and in planes E2, E3 and E4,
respectively, contact each
other only in sections in at least two sections (30a', 31a', 30b', 31b', 30c',
31c'),
where the contact sections (30a', 31a', 30b', 31b', 30c', 31c') are arranged
in such a manner
that they are situated on both sides of virtual straight lines (5a, 5b, 5c),
which extend in the
main direction of the respective indentation/protrusion (3a', 3b', 3c') of the
second layer (3)
without positive fit between the corresponding indentations/protrusions
(2a'/3a', 2b'/ 3b'
and 2c'/3c') in the planes E2, E3 and E4,

where the first and second straight lines (5a, 5b) extend under an angle of -
10° to 10° to
each other and where the third straight line (5c) extends under an angle of
80° to 100° to the
first and second straight lines (5a, 5b).

10. Bipolar plate according to claim 8 or 9, characterized in that the
indentations/protrusions
(2a, 2b) of the first layer (2) are self-centring to the
indentations/protrusions (3a, 3b) of the
second layer (3).

11. Bipolar plate according to one of claims 8,9 or 10, characterized in that
at least one of
the first, second and if applicable third indentations/protrusions of the
first and/or second
layer (2, 3) comprises a through opening (2ax, 2bx, 3ax, 3bx, 2ax', 2bx',
2cx', 3ax', 3bx', 3cx').
12. Bipolar plate according to claim 11, characterized in that the through
opening (2ax, 2bx,
3ax, 3bx, 2ax', 2bx', 2cx', 3ax', 3bx', 3cx') is arranged centred in the
corresponding
indentation/protrusion (2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, 2a', 2b', 2c', 3a', 3b', 3c').

13. Bipolar plate according to one of claims 8 to 12, characterized in that
the first
indentations/protrusions (2a, 3a) of the first and second layer (2, 3) each
have circular shape
or the shape of a polygon with rounded corners.

14. Bipolar plate according to one of claims 8 and 10 to 13, characterized in
that the second
indentation/protrusion (2b) of the first layer (2) is circular or polygonal
with rounded corners
and that the second indentation/protrusion (3b) of the second layer (3) is
oblong.

15. Bipolar plate according to one of claims 9, 11 and 12, characterized in
that at least the
first, the second and the third indentations/protrusions (2a', 2b', 2c') of
the first layer (2') is
circular or polygonal with rounded corners and that the first, the second and
the third
indentations/protrusions (3a', 3b', 3c') of the second layer (3') are oblong.

16. Bipolar plate according to one of claims 8 to 15, characterized in that at
least one of the
layers (2, 3) has a channel structure (14) and that the main extension
direction (5) of the
second indentation/protrusion (3b) of the second layer (3) extends in parallel
to the main
direction of the channel structure (4).

17. Bipolar plate according to one of claims 8 to 16, characterized in that
the channel
structure (4) of the layers (2, 3) provides a cavity between the layers (2,
3), especially a cavity
for guiding a coolant medium.

18. Bipolar plate according to one of claims 8 to 17, characterized in that
the
indentations/protrusions (2a, 3a) have conical shape.

19. Bipolar plate according to claim 18, characterized in that the
indentations/protrusions of
the first layer (2) show a larger or smaller cone angle (.alpha.2) than the
cone angle (.alpha.3) of the
complementary indentation/protrusion of the second layer (3).

20. Bipolar plate according to one of claims 8 to 19, characterized in that
the
indentations/protrusions (2a or 3a) of one layer (2 or 3) are less profound
than the
indentations/protrusions (3a or 2a) of the other layer (3 or 2).

21. Bipolar plate according to one of claims 8 to 20, characterized in that
the
indentations/protrusions (2a, 2a', 2b, 2b', 2c', 3a, 3a', 3b, 3b', 3c') each
consist of a first
indentation/protrusion pointing in a first direction perpendicular to the
plate plane E and a
second protrusion/indentation arranged within the first indentation/protrusion
pointing in
the opposite direction, where the second protrusion/indentation has a higher
depth than
the first indentation/protrusion.
