Statement from the Chief Science Advisor on Canada Day

Dr. Mona Nemer, Chief Science Advisor of Canada, issued the following statement on Canada Day:

Every year, Canadians come together on this day to celebrate the diversity and ingenuity of our country and the values that unite us. This year, as we continue our efforts to fight the global COVID-19 pandemic, we have had to come up with creative ways to celebrate and stay connected. In so doing, we can collectively recognize the sacrifices that many of us have had to make, and acknowledge those who have been directly affected by COVID-19.

Recent months have enabled us to reflect on our priorities as individuals and as a society. The pandemic has underscored both our interconnectedness with the world around us and our reliance on others for support and well-being. Without our frontline workers, the first half of 2020 would have been very different for Canada.

So many have contributed enormously to seeing us through this crisis, from scientists and health care workers to the many people providing essential services. Because of them and all people doing their part, we can be hopeful about rebuilding our economy. The progress we have made has generated widespread interest in science. Never before has science played such a huge role in the public discourse. Together, we are building an informed and progressive society that will overcome the challenges of today and be equipped to respond to the questions of tomorrow.

Whether you are celebrating today with close family in your home or connecting virtually to loved ones across the country, happy Canada Day! We will get through this together, and science will help us every step of the way.
