Every year for nearly 40 years now, BDC has organized this celebration of small business. BDC is Canada's only bank dedicated to serving small businesses. BDC clearly understands that Canada's small businesses are the backbone of our economy.

They employ about 70 percent of the private sector workforce and represent more than 30 percent of GDP. They are key members of our communities–large and small–right across this great country.

Much has changed since the first Small Business Week in 1981: changing demographics have reshaped Canada's workforce; technology has transformed sectors of the economy; the pace continues to accelerate.

So it makes this year's theme of "Future-proofing your business" especially timely.

In 1981, we didn't have the Internet. Today, it is essential for Canada that small businesses succeed. They want to increase their online sales, reach new customers around the world and join international supply chains. And while the technologies may be new, the fact that small businesses are crucial to the Canadian economy has never changed.

Another thing that won't change [is] our government's commitment to seeing Canadian small businesses succeed, invest and grow. We are committed to working with you to ensure that you have the tools you need to build successful small businesses.

Each year, more than 10,000 entrepreneurs and business owners celebrate BDC Small Business Week at events right across Canada.

Today we kick off another fantastic week, where we recognize and celebrate small business achievements, and explore how we can work together–to further grow and create good-paying, middle-class jobs.

Thanks for joining us.
