Laura McGee: So why do we need a Women Entrepreneurship Strategy?

At the end of the day, economically, the greatest asset that we have are our people. And half of the people living in Canada happen to be women. And so, what will drive the economy going forward will be entrepreneurs of all genders. At the end of the day, we do know there are specific barriers that face—are faced by women, so things like access to capital, access to networks, family economics, and the fact that they typically raise their children and take care of their elderly parents. And so, I think it's really important to be focused and strategic about how we help half of the population overcome those barriers so that we can start more businesses, ultimately grow the economy and help Canada stay as competitive as we can.

So what advice would I give to a woman entrepreneur at any stage of the pipeline, starting or scaling her business?

I do believe this is a moment in time where Canadians understand the value of unlocking women's entrepreneurship. And so, there's a lot of support. There's a lot of resources available for women, and I think it's up to us now to be opportunistic and resourceful and take advantage of those opportunities and raise our collective ambitions so that we scale ourselves to the next level.
