Stream 4 – National Scale Initiatives at the intersection of Data and Digital Capabilities in the Health and Biosciences

From: Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada

Winning Applicant: Sunnybrook Research Institute

Project Name: Industry Consortium for Image Guided Therapy (ICIGT)

This proposal is a targeted commercialization initiative that leverages progress in artificial intelligence (AI) facilitated data processing and outstanding research and business expertise in Image-Guided Therapy (IGT). The initiative will advance leading-edge medical technologies by applying machine learning (ML) and AI to large diagnostic imaging datasets (e.g. MRI, CT).

News Release

Key Outcomes:

Technology advancement Improved diagnostic accuracy (reduction in under diagnosis/over diagnosis) in brain disease, oncology, musculo-skeletal and diabetic issues.
Forging new partnerships

Canada's strengths in IGT and artificial intelligence will be leveraged and merged to further scientific, clinical, and commercial breakthroughs.

ICIGT brings together IGT clusters in Toronto, ON; London, ON; Halifax, NS; Newfoundland, and Alberta.

Improved health care for all Canadians

The project will shorten pathways to market for promising and high-impact, disruptive hnologies that are designed to address gaps in Canada's health care systems.

Reduced public health care costs are anticipated through improved diagnostic accuracy and speed of IGT-supported treatments.

Catalyzing innovation and growth

Technologies developed through the ICIGT are expected to underpin SME start-ups and expansion and have high export potential for adoption in global healthcare systems.

Many technologies developed with a focus on IGT will also be adaptable to other image-intensive industries.

Other benefits Disruptive application of machine learning to massive diagnostic image datasets
