International council on nanotechnology

Based at Rice University, located in Houston, Texas, the mission of the International Council on Nanotechnology (ICON) is to develop and communicate information regarding the potential environmental and health risks of nanotechnology, thereby fostering risk reduction while maximizing societal benefits. ICON is a technically driven organization whose activities are broadly supported by industry, non-profit foundations, and governments. It offers a one-stop source for news and research related to the environmental, health, and safety impacts of nanomaterials. Users can access news items, reports, and the comprehensive database of research publications on the International Council on Nanotechnology website.

In 2009, ICON launched the GoodNanoGuide as an open-source collaborative online resource for sharing good practices for handling nanomaterials. Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada is a past sponsor of the GoodNanoGuide.
