Methods of payment accepted

Payment methods we accept

You must pay all fees to the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) in Canadian dollars. We do not accept foreign currencies or post-dated cheques.

Ways to pay

CIPO accepts the following types of payment:

Debit cards

Payments by debit card are accepted only at CIPO's headquarters, located at 50 Victoria Street, Place du Portage I, Room C229 in Gatineau, Quebec.

Credit cards

You may make credit card payments online, by mail, by fax or in person.

We take Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards only.

Note that there is a limit of $99,999 or 2,000 files per online credit card transaction.

Online statements allow you to see the transactions that we have processed against your deposit accounts and credit cards.

Deposit accounts

You can make deposit account payments online, by fax, by mail or in person.

Opening a deposit account
  1. Fill out the deposit account form.
  2. Send the form by email to our Incoming Correspondence Unit.
Using your deposit account

To add an authorized user to your deposit account:

  • contact CIPO's Incoming Correspondence Unit in writing (mail, fax or email)
    • include the name of your firm, your deposit account number and the CIPO username for the individual for whom access is requested

Replenishing your deposit account

Using the Fee form, you can add funds to your deposit account via debit card, cheque/money order or wire transfer.

You can also replenish your account using your bank's bill payment service.

To replenish your account with the Fee form, fill out the form and send it to CIPO with your payment by:

Viewing deposit account statements

Online statements allow you to see the transactions that we've processed against your deposit accounts and credit cards.

To see your online statements, you must contact CIPO's Incoming Correspondence Unit in writing (mail, fax or email) and link your deposit account to the people in your firm who are authorized to work with CIPO. Please include the name of your firm, your deposit account numbers, and your CIPO username.

Note that there is a limit of 2,000 files per deposit account transaction.

Closing your deposit account

When requesting the closure of your CIPO deposit account, the request must be made on company letterhead to be accepted.

To close a deposit account, clients have the following options:

  1. Complete the Fee form and remit by fax, mail, in person or email to CIPO Accounts Receivable.
  2. Complete the close a deposit account form and remit by fax, mail, in person or email to CIPO Accounts Receivable.
  3. Send an email to CIPO Accounts Receivable.
Online banking services

CIPO's deposit account holders can replenish their accounts through their Canadian bank's online system.

To open a CIPO deposit account, follow our instructions.

To transfer funds online from your Canadian bank to your CIPO deposit account, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure you have a My Canada Business Account.
  2. Email our Incoming Correspondence Unit to link your CIPO username to your CIPO deposit account. Your request must include your name and/or firm's name, CIPO deposit account number and CIPO username.
    • Don't know your CIPO username? Log in to any CIPO online service. Your CIPO username will be shown at the top of the page where it says "Signed in as [username]."
  3. Log in to your online banking account and add CIPO as a recipient in the bill payment section. Please note CIPO might appear as Canadian Intellectual Property Office, Office de la propriété intellectuelle du Canada or a similar name.
  4. Use the 10-digit number available on your online statement.
  5. Transfer an amount of money.

Note: It can take from 1 to 3 business days for CIPO to receive the funds.

Cheques and money orders

All cheques and money orders must be in Canadian dollars and made payable to the Receiver General for Canada. Note that we do not accept post-dated cheques.

Wire transfers

Important information: All electronic funds transfers must be made through the Fédération des caisses Desjardins du Québec in Canadian dollars and be made payable to the Receiver General for Canada.

To avoid processing delays, we suggest that you include the following information with your bank transfer:

Contact information: the name and telephone number of the contact person
Identification number: the deposit account number or your file number
Request: replenishment, or another type of service

To help us identify the services you need, you must send us the date of the bank transfer and a printout of your receipt by:

Please note that you are responsible for any transaction fees charged by your banking institution. You must account for all charges related to electronic payments to ensure they will not be deducted from the remittance amount.

Ways to send a payment

Please note that documents, payments and payment instructions delivered in person are only processed at CIPO's headquarters: Place du Portage I, 50 Victoria Street, Room C-114, Gatineau, Quebec, K1A 0C9. In-person payment transactions are only processed at the CIPO headquarters location.
