Applicants interested in electronically filing international patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) can prepare files using either ePCT or PCT-SAFE, both of which are created and provided free of charge by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

ePCT is a web-based service that is updated automatically and therefore does not require user intervention to do so. PCT-SAFE is a downloadable software program. It is very important for users of PCT-SAFE to keep abreast of software updates and install them when available. Not doing so can lead to filing errors.

Regardless of how an electronic international application is created, applicants must use the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO)'s PCT e-filing service.

For more information on WIPO's ePCT service or PCT-SAFE program, visit PCT Electronic Services.

For more on CIPO's PCT e-filing service, visit Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) e-filing.

If you have questions on any of the above, please contact the Program Manager – International (PCT – PPH).
