- Success in school, academic ability and behaviour go hand in hand.
Created TRY (Taking Responsibility for Yourself), an in-school program for at-risk students, and heads alternative education team:
- TRY students take courses on interpersonal communications and personal development, and individualized, independent learning courses to earn a high school diploma and complete credits rather than retake courses.
- To counteract negative community attitudes towards at-risk students runs program at regular classroom ratios, makes students accountable for success and good reputation of program, and employs public relations strategies.
- A significant reduction in discipline problems and improvement in academic performance has resulted. Mainstream classes and teachers are using some TRY methods to help students before they become high-risk.
Wrote human relations curriculum, Empowering Ourselves Together, designed to assist those working with troubled teens; trained teachers and social service agency workers to employ program.
Developed five new courses for area high schools, initiated peer mediation program that later became a credit course in conflict resolution, and created three academic programs for flexible study.
