Teaching approach:

  • Success in school, academic ability and behaviour go hand in hand.

Outstanding achievements:

Created TRY (Taking Responsibility for Yourself), an in-school program for at-risk students, and heads alternative education team:

  • TRY students take courses on interpersonal communications and personal development, and individualized, independent learning courses to earn a high school diploma and complete credits rather than retake courses.
  • To counteract negative community attitudes towards at-risk students runs program at regular classroom ratios, makes students accountable for success and good reputation of program, and employs public relations strategies.
  • A significant reduction in discipline problems and improvement in academic performance has resulted. Mainstream classes and teachers are using some TRY methods to help students before they become high-risk.

Wrote human relations curriculum, Empowering Ourselves Together, designed to assist those working with troubled teens; trained teachers and social service agency workers to employ program.

Developed five new courses for area high schools, initiated peer mediation program that later became a credit course in conflict resolution, and created three academic programs for flexible study.
